PREPARING the LEARNER TASKS
day 1
1. Complete Talk Survey (brief) ...This can be downloaded, printed, and copied from another page
2. Extended Anticipatory guide (applies to ALL 7 "Talking Service" Texts)
3. Think-Pair-Share about a time when students provided or received service, or aid/help.
INTERACTING with the TEXTS (day 2 and 3)
Day 2
1. A Bed for the Night
a. Teacher readaloud
b. Clarifying Bookmark #1 in partners
2. Reading with a focus.
Re-read with Focus question: Why does the narrator make a point of telling us the man's action "won't change the world/ it won't improve relations among men/ it would not shorten the age of exploitation?"
a. Set up your journal.
b. Re-read text and respond in your journal independently (3-5 min).
c. Round-Robin share at table (3 min)
(next day perhaps)
Day 3
3. Repeat process with grade level text. For example: "The Lamb and the Pinecone" ~ Focus question: How does the exchange of the sheep and the pinecone bring home to Neruda that "all of humanity is somehow together?"
EXTENDING UNDERSTANDING TO BE COMPLETED AT END OF 2 WEEKS.

1. Collaborative Poster: News Article about either homelessness or philanthropy (giving)
